Shin Lin, PhDShin Lin, Ph.D.

Professor Shin Lin teaches Cell Biology, Biomedical Engineering, and Integrative Medicine and is a member of the Susan Samueli Integrative Health Institute at the University of California, Irvine. He received his Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry at UCLA and postdoctoral training in Biochemistry & Biophysics at the School of Medicine of University of California, San Francisco. For many years, he served as Chairman of Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University, where he co-founded the Kreiger Mind/Brain Institute and the Cardiovascular Mechanics Research Center. He was later appointed Dean of the School of Biological Sciences and Associate Vice Chancellor for Biomedical Initiatives at UC Irvine. Dr. Lin has trained with several leading Tai Chi/Qigong masters and is a 20th generation inheritor of Chen Style Tai Chi designated by Grandmaster Chen Zhanglei. He is also a graduate of the Acupuncture for Physical Medicine program at Hong Kong Polytechnic University and have been Visiting Professor at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over a decade. Dr. Lin founded the Laboratory for Mind/Body Signaling and Energy Research (MindBodyLab.Bio.UCI.edu) at UC Irvine for hi-tech studies on the health benefits of Tai Chi/Qigong and traditional Chinese medical therapies, authoring over 50 publications in this field. He was on the National Advisory Council for Complementary Medicine and Integrative Health and served as Chairman of a Think Tank on Bioenergy Medicine and a scientific advisor on Non-Pharmacological Management of Pain and Stress in the Military, all at the U.S. National Institutes of Health. He was on the editorial board of the BioMed Central journal Chinese Medicine and a scientific advisor for the publication of the series of books on Traditional and Classical Chinese Health Cultivation by the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Dr. Lin is presently on the editorial board of Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, Hon. Chairman of the Geriatric Medical Council of the Gerontological Society of China, and Co-Chair of the World Congress for Qigong/Tai Chi and Traditional Chinese Medicine since 2004.
